National Health and Fitness Day

It shouldn’t be so hard to get moving.

Most Canadians understand that physical activity supports their health, energy, mental well-being, and quality of life. The problem isn’t awareness—it’s getting started.

Too many people still feel unsure about where to begin, whether opportunities are welcoming, or how to make movement part of everyday life. Community programs can feel hard to find or difficult to access. Motivation to move remains low, and people stay inactive.

But we can do better.

National Health and Fitness Day is the opportunity Canadians have been waiting for: a chance to come together in community and transition from wanting to move to actually moving.

A Day for all Canadians to Move Together

The Canadian Health and Fitness Institute works with partners across the country to strengthen a national culture of movement, wellbeing, and active living. In 2014, our founder, John Weston, helped to establish National Health and Fitness Day as a chance for Canadians to come together for a simple but powerful reason:

To move. Together.

Since then, the day has grown into a national rallying cry that brings people together through walks, runs, local events, and community activations. Every activity is simple, welcoming, and shared with others.

Because movement is for everyone, and every step matters.

Rally for active living with Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

National Health and Fitness Day is a day for Canadians to get moving in their own communities. It can be a walk with neighbours, a run with friends, a school activity, a workplace challenge, a park event, or a simple commitment to move more than usual.

National Health and Fitness Day matters because movement is one of the most practical ways to improve health, build connections, and strengthen communities. A single day won’t solve Canada’s inactivity problem on its own, but it helps people start moving. Importantly, that movement is visible. It can remind families, workplaces, schools, municipalities, and leaders that active living belongs at the centre of a healthier Canada.

How You Can Participate in this National Movement

You don’t have to be an athlete, join a big race, or train for a major fitness challenge. You only need to take one step forward and invite someone else to do the same.

1. Choose how you’ll move.

Join a local fitness event or organise your own.

2. Invite someone to join you.

Movement is easier and more meaningful when shared with friends, colleagues, and family.

3. Be part of the bigger movement.

Your activity helps our Let’s Move Canada campaign get 1,000,000 Canadians moving more.

One day can get you moving—and build a more active Canada

Knowing that physical movement is important isn’t enough to create healthier communities. Canadians need visible, welcoming, practical ways to participate.

When you take part in National Health and Fitness Day, you help make movement more normal, more social, and more accessible. You help build momentum for Let’s Move Canada and the larger goal of mobilising 1,000,000 Canadians to move more. You help create a future where movement is part of everyday life, where communities are healthier and more connected, and where people of every age and ability can find a place to begin.

That future starts with Canadians choosing to move together.

Join us in movement on the first Saturday of June.
